Seeing that little Stalin avatar again did put a smile on my face. Pure nostalgia. Somewhere on some unused dead edit of my WWII map is his little name set as a country on an old outdated ban list. He asked nicely and I took him off. Here's an ancient and amusing screenshot he sent me.

No this game is not alive because of one individual, it is active due to login and plays of hundreds 'little men', who play silently, without using forum or making drama. The low and midranks. Your ego-inflated buddies are not making a difference, thinking game will die if they log off for few months and 'stop to contribute'.

I could have sworn I remember you deliberately messing with games at some point but I could be wrong. I was a little bit draconian back in the day. At the time I was trying to change the culture of atwar to combat these unfair and negative behaviours. They were killing it. If you remember, map makers collectively unionised and called map strikes in an effort to get a banlist, and we got it. We had games of people waiting for 30-40mins for a game to fill and all it took was one dipshit to ruin it. While the banlist helped, it didn't stop this occurring. One person can ruin a game people wait a long time to play, and this creates a demoralising effect. When this happens enough times, people stop joining, and eventually they stop playing altogether. It did serious damage to scenario culture and I believe this led to the rise of the RP era. RP games aren't harmed by rule breakers, and they took over as SP farms that WWII games used to be. WWII games and other high quality scenarios taught new skills and strategy. RP was a clusterfuck and created a parallel group of players who simply did not know how to play outside of RP. Now, I am not saying this is entirely bad, because more options of game styles is better than less, but this new collection of RP games coupled with higher quality scenarios being easily ruined killed off the the other parallel side of scenario's. I took draconian measures to improve quality for everyone but it was like fighting an endless wave of shit. Players left, including myself and it never returned to the height it once was. The game isn't 'dead', and I don't know the numbers, but I suspect that the people that play it today are people passing through for games of risk. The culture is dead though. The heady years of competitive mapmaking and high-quality scenarios with game theory strategising for maximum-quality group-wargames are gone.

Ultimately, this is the fault of the administration. Map making was utterly bugged and the promises never ended, but rarely got delivered. High-quality scenarios were too easily ruined by griefers. Also, if a map maker leaves, then the scenario rules become unenforced. Mods got a lot of blame, as they have a job to essentially defend the status quo and are held back by specific rules regarding players in-game behavior. I suspect they were just as frustrated as players were in some respects.

I think what disappoints most of us is the knowledge that AtWar could have been so much bigger and better. There are so many possibilities for map making and they'll never see the light of day.

Shit happens, but my bad if you were improperly treated.

And i was part of it. I also had my own maps back then and enforced banlist. Why would i ruin someone elses then? Aetius is way more draconian than you, he bans for just talking stupid in his maps (like vichy in ww2), yet i don't have a warning from him, let alone ban or probation. I still play his maps, almost daily.

I still enforce my banlist, and it is draconian (as you said, it is dead culture, but i don't fight it with softness), i don't ban leaving only, but trolling as well. Usually low and midranks leave, while highranks troll (personal insults, threats, being repeatedly toxic), not only when they troll me, but when i see they harass others as well, i apply rules equally.
