I've always wondered... are Indians nationalist / feels identified with their country cause?

To me India has always been like "We can war Pakistan, but then we will have to move our troops and we will have riots and protests plus our economy can't handle it and we'll go against Mahatma Gandhi so we will eventually fuck ourselves".

Pakistan on the other side is muslim and looks like a warring country that would objurgate it's population to win.

P.S: this is obviously farm.

Napísal clovis1122, 10.02.2017 at 09:34

I've always wondered... are Indians nationalist / feels identified with their country cause?

Well in 2014, a Nationalist government was elected. For decades there was resentment of 'secularism' where the government (formed by the Indian National Congress Party) pandered to minorities and tackled inequality against the minorities, by creating inequality against the majorities.
Finally people got fed-up and elected the afore-mentioned Nationalist government (from the Bharatiya Janta Party: translation: Indian People's Party) and gave them the largest ever majority possessed by a single party since 1974.
The current Prime Minister Narendra Modi is ridiculously popular, despite being a Nationalist. How popular? Well, 8 in 10 Indians have a favourable view of him (myself included), 2 in 3 Indians are satisfied with the country's direction, and four out of five think the economy is doing well. Even in the long-neglected far-east where development has been stunted, he has a lot of support. In 2015 he had near 90% approval ratings. Source: Huffington Post.
So yes, India is Nationalist right now, and hopefully will remain so, because frankly this country is ridiculously bureaucratic, and he's been butchering decades of moderatism and corruption, clearing up red tape left-right-and-center. But there's still a lot to be done. Hopefully he wins the 2019 election too He's done more to help this country in 3 years than the previous government did in the 10 years it had power before this.

Napísal clovis1122, 10.02.2017 at 09:34

To me India has always been like "We can war Pakistan, but then we will have to move our troops

India has no problem moving troops to fight Pakistan right now although it did in 2001.
Background:
In 2001 armed gunmen stormed the Indian Parliament while in session and it was obviously hugely scandalous and MPs were killed. Pakistani connection was found and 3 Indian Strike Corps (500,000 to 700,000 soldiers) were mobilised against Pakistan, while the 7 defensive holding corps fortified Indian territory. The Strike Corps were however based in Delhi and in the 2 weeks it took them to get to the border, Pakistan had fortified, and UN diplomatic pressure forced Parliament to call it off.
After that, a massive reform was instituted. The Strike Corps were turned into 8 armoured brigades supported by infantry, and based at the border. Within 24 to 72 hours of the go-order, these 700,000 men would basically engage in blitzkrieg. Rather than a massive knockout blow from the Strike Corps by cutting Pakistan in two at the north (an actual plan), they would make territorial gains which would give India an advantage at the negotiating table. It also removed the 'regime survival' justification Pakistan would need to use nukes. It was named Cold Start and and Pakistan in response ramped up production of 'tactical' nuclear warheads becoming the world's fastest growing nuclear arsenal. By 2020-25 it'll be the largest behind only US and Russia. This has placed a massive strain on its economy frankly, and it's kept afloat only by Obama's charity and pity, but what can you expect from a country that has had 3 successful military coups?
Another nightmare is that nuke codes are in the hands of battlefield commanders and not the freaking government. The government just has the keys to the bunkers where the nukes are stored, and they're insecure and guarded by the same battlefield commanders who have the nuke codes...

Napísal clovis1122, 10.02.2017 at 09:34

and we will have riots and protests plus our economy can't handle it

>World's 6th largest economy by nominal GDP
>World's 3rd largest economy by Purchasing Power Parity
>$51 billion dollar defence budget for 2016
>Says it can't handle war against Pakistan...
Just saying, Pakistan spends 3% of GDP on military and has a budget of $7billion
India spends 1.6% and has a budget of $51 billion, and is expected to spend $250 billion on arms over the next few years. How in the world can the economy not afford it? People are actually complaining that the proportion of expenditure to GDP is too little and should be capped at 3%

As for the riots, they're literally paid to do it. During the recent demonetisation cash crunch, hundreds of maoists and naxals surrendered (highest ever) in a single month because they had no cash and weren't being paid. More surrendered in one month than in the previous year.

Napísal clovis1122, 10.02.2017 at 09:34

and we'll go against Mahatma Gandhi so we will eventually fuck ourselves".

Gandhi may have been peace-loving and while admirable, much of his 'awesomeness' is propaganda, Nehru was a person who turned down membership in ASEAN, and a permanent seat on the UNSC in 1952, and when warned by the military that China was going to attack it before 1962, refused to consider it and downgraded the military even further. When India did get attacked, AS HE WAS WARNED WE WOULD BE, militarily speaking, we got embarrassed like hell.

Pakistan was formed because Jinnah and Nehru both wanted to be PM of India, and compromised by fucking splitting a country on religious lines....what does that tell you about those so-called 'icons'?

If India wanted to invade, occupy, dominate and colonize Pakistan, it could do it fairly easily. It's been a few decades since the war between India and Pakistan, but Pakistan got utterly annihilated. It lost huge swathes of land which were given back to them by India under US/Russian/US pressure.

Pakistan barely has a functioning government and it's military isn't as sophisticated, supplied or as numerous as India's. Even in a nuclear exchange, India would survive, Pakistan would not.

India is likely going to collapse if global economics tank again though. Even so, Pakistan can't do anything. Frankly, I don't know why these people can't get along but you can't fight ethnic and cultural tribalism, we never will, which is why fences makes good friends.

Would love to hear more about the goings-on in India and what you think would happen in India if global markets failed. What of the growing Muslim population, the ethnic tensions and the possibilities of growing Feminism in the country?

Thank you

Well about if the global markets fell:
There is a perception in India that even if the global economy collapsed overnight, India would be minimally affected as we are mostly self-sufficient. Until 1991, this was almost completely true. Today its less so, but still mostly accurate.
Background:
After Independence, India continued to follow Gandhi's philosophy of 'Swadeshi' i.e 'Self-sufficiency' in all aspects. It led to an economy that was closed off from the world for decades, that was predominantly controlled by the Government, and private sector was tiny. In essence, a mild form of socialism (NOT communism; those are different). Until 1947, India was known as the British Raj (Raj means Empire/Kingdom). The period after that is known as License Raj because almost all the industries were regulated by the government, and you needed a license to set up shop, foreign investment was kept minimum etc. China followed a similar policy. China deregulated in the 70s or 80s and went from a middling economy lesser than India's at the time, to a massive one in a few decades. This gave impetus to movements to deregulate and open up the Indian market to globalization. The government resisted, but from 1985 India started having balance of payments problems. By end of 1990, it was in serious economic crisis. This was due to a massive increase in the oil bill when oil prices rose during the Gulf War (India is oil poor: 3/4ths of its oil is imported). It had enough cash only to conduct business for 3 weeks. After that, the reserves would be empty.
This is what Wikipedia says:
The gross fiscal deficit of the government (centre and states) rose from 9.0 percent of GDP in 1980-81 to 10.4 percent in 1985-86 and to 12.7 percent in 1990-91. For the centre alone, the gross fiscal deficit rose from 6.1 percent of GDP in 1980-81 to 8.3 percent in 1985-86 and to 8.4 percent in 1990-91. Since these deficits had to be met by borrowings, the internal debt of the government accumulated rapidly, rising from 35 percent of GDP at the end of 1980-81 to 53 percent of GDP at the end of 1990-91. The foreign exchange reserves had dried up to the point that India could barely finance three weeks worth of imports.
In mid-1991, India's exchange rate was subjected to a severe adjustment. This event began with a slide in the value of the Indian rupee leading up to mid-1991. The authorities at the Reserve Bank of India took partial action, defending the currency by expending international reserves and slowing the decline in value. However, in mid-1991, with foreign reserves nearly depleted, the Indian government permitted a sharp depreciation that took place in two steps within three days (1 July and 3 July 1991) against major currencies.

This led to what is now known as LPG: Liberalization, Privatization, Globalization. India needed money desperately to pay off its debts. So the Prime Minister at the time asked the IMF. They agreed on condition of globalization. India agreed, and the 67 tons of the gold reserves of India was loaded on a plane and sent off to the IMF as surety against loan of $2.2 billion. The government later collapsed from a No-Confidence Vote mid-1991.
The new government ushered in the LPG reforms, and the Indian economy had recovered by the end of the year.

So basically, until 1991 India was self-sufficient except in oil. Soaring oil prices thanks to the Gulf War and US being a bully and bombing the shit out of countries that can't fight back, led to a near-economic collapse. This opened the way to LPG and the private sector industry soared. India still is a mixed economy. Meaning there are 4 Industries where you still need a license (defence - guns are banned for civil use here, alcohol and 2 others), but otherwise are mostly deregulated. When I say deregulated I mean compared to before, as even today, India is notoriously bureaucratic. India's global economy is now tied in with the rest of the world's and would thus be affected a bit, but not a lot. How can I say this? Well during the 2008 World Economic Crisis, Indian economy's growth rate was 7% (it fell from 7.3% in 2007 and recovered to 7.4% in 2009) while the rest of the world struggled through recession. So unless there's a MAJOR collapse, India won't be affected much.

About the growing Muslim population:
I'd rather not say much about that. I don't quite like Muslims as a religion personally. I mean, I have Muslim friends and stuff, but I hate the religion they follow which is so easy to twist to radical needs. But I'm an agnostic, so what do I know
In short, there are communal tensions, but overall nothing radical and crazy like in the middle east and Pakistan. In India, majority of Muslims and Hindus live in peace and there are Muslim movements here denouncing ISIS. There was some crazy rumours a while back that some 'radicals' wanted the government to go to war against ISIS.

Ethnic tensions:
Like I said, they're paid. There is a "Patel" community that wants economic and educational subsidies and benefits from the government. They started burning shit and rioting. Funny thing is, they're some of the richest people in India. They fucking drive Bentleys and shit. During the cash crunch, there was no ethnic tension, no riot, insurgencies surrendered, Pakistani shelling of Indian fortifications stopped, terrorist attacks in northern states stopped. People say demonetization did nothing but create trouble. But its been 3 months since then and there's hardly any riots or anything. Before that, if you didn't have at least 2 bombings somewhere in northern India near Pakistan, or Eastern India near China, it was a slow news day. Pakistan had to throw out its fake currency plates it used to counterfeit Indian currency and pay terrorists and flood the market with. Now, there's nothing. All this had started after the previous government lost power in 2014 election and it's not proven but I swear to you the opposition is doing a lot of this shit.

Growing feminism:
I hate feminism. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for gender equality. But feminism wants to treat inequality against women by creating inequality against men.

Well, historically speaking the muslim population in India was always a cancer, a virus, spreading and multiplying while doing immense damage to the host.

Now in modern times, how about state-sponsored terrorism, proxy war against India, Kashmir issue, anti-Indian propaganda, ceasefire violations and etc.

Pakistan is close to being a failed state. If you take Africa out of the equation, it is surely the worst place in earth. Supposedly democratic in paper, is a mix of theocracy and military dictatorship, they give the death sentence for blasphemy, rape children legally, kill medical workers, torture journalists, are responsible for"thousands" of acid attacks on womens faces and etc Would you get along with this coackroach as your neighbour?

Now, Pakistanis are not really humans. They are not even animals. They are worms. Under Geneva convention prisoners of war should be met with humane treatment and Pakistan should respect that since it cries to UN every year. But despite that, in 1999 when they captured 6 Indian soldiers alive, look what they did.

"Post-mortem examinations revealed that the Pakistanis had tortured their prisoners by: burning their bodies with cigarettes, piercing the ear-drums with hot rods, puncturing eyes before removing them, breaking most of their teeth and bones, fracturing their skulls, cutting the lips, chipping of nose, chopping off limbs and private organs of the soldiers, and finally shooting them dead, as evidenced by bullet wounds to the temple. The post-mortem also confirmed the injuries were inflicted ante-mortem (before death)."

While it's more or less a generalization, it's actually true that the majority of the population still holds backward beliefs and strongly preaches for terrorism. I've spoken to a couple of Pakis and it's actually surprising how much religion affects them.

Lol you should read the amount of Propaganda in their newspapers. They have a newspaper called "Dawn". Basically any article you find related to defence or economy (Idk about others I read only those) they'll find a way to relate it to India and how India is no match for OP-plz-nerf Pakistani armed forces and how Pakistan hasn't actually lost any war against India etc etc (Pakistan has started 4 wars against India all of which they lost. In 1971 half their country seceded and formed Bangladesh after Pakistan started genociding Hindus). Even today Pakistan is conducting genocide against Balochis in balochistan (a large province of Pakistan)

I know, as a European i am pretty much used to being the bad guy, the racist, bigot who oppress the muslims right to torture, murder and rape. Shame on me for generalizing.

Only its not the army that rapes and marries children. Only its not the army that throws acid in womens faces if they protest against marrying their uncle. Its not the military that uses public lynching for the undesirables, stone women, mutilate thieves in the town square as a public spectacle, not the army's fault that citizen mobs target and murder bloggers, journalists and human rights activists.

As a last note, keep in mind that 66% of Pakistanis favour the death penalty for apostasy and 85% favour sharia law and islamic courts. Statistics dont lie.
