Explain the Euro cup to an american
---- All our yesterdays have lighted fools the way to dusty death. Life's but a walking shadow a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more. It is a tale told by an idiot full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing

Alright, here you go: In football, every country has it's domestic league, where only clubs play. For example: England has the Premier League (Manchester United, Arsenal London, etc) Spain has la Liga (Real Madrid, Barcelona, etc) France has League 1 (Paris Saint-Germain, Olympique Lyon, etc) Italy has Serie A (Juventus Turin, AC Milan, etc) Germany has the Bundesliga (Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, etc) Same goes for most/all of the European countries. Those leagues play every year on a seasonal basis. The top teams qualify for the the Champions League, the European elite club devision, where only the best teams of each league participate. The tournament that you refered to as played a few weeks ago must have been the Champions League and you probably meant it's final, where Chelsea London played Bayern Munich. Now that is only club level. The European Cup is an international tournament, where no clubs participate. The European countries that qualified for the end round, that is about to begin, draft their best national players from the clubs to form a national team that represents their country at the Euros. This is always an amazing thing for me, as you have all the best players you love and hate, that are spread out through the leagues clubs, united in a single team that represent their country. So players that are usually opponents now play together and try to give their best for their country. Now, not every country does qualify for the Euro Cup. The tournament only hosts 16 nations that must qualify through a series of qualification games. Here you can look up who qualified: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Euro_2012#Final_draw The tournament itself has a group stage, where a win equals 3 points, a draw 1 point and a loss 0 points. The two teams with the most points at the end of the group stages progress to the knockout stage. From there on it's you win or you go home. This is the most important trophy a European nation can earn besides the World Cup and it's only hosted every 4 years. It's always a huuuge festival of nations, where people wave their national flags, come together in huge crowds to watch the games and have plain fun. In my home city of Berlin there is a fan mile at the Brandenburg Gate where theres always between 500.000 to 1.000.000 people watching the game together. I myself like to go to smaller public viewing events, but I often was at the fan mile too. After a win most of the people are extremly happy and stroll the streets singing, strangers become friends and you just party hard. It's always a great time! Watch this video if you like: http://youtu.be/JvUzF-AMJpI It's our teams way through the World Cup 2010 (which is much like the Euro Cup, only that the whole world can participate). You might get a grasp of the atmosphere, even though the commentary is in German. Berlin fan mile: http://youtu.be/A9VMLTLr-qg
